Quick answer
Start with the patient's mobility: a fowler bed suits most home recoveries, while bedridden patients need an ICU bed (ideally electric). Then check the room space and power, choose a medical mattress, make sure there are side railings and lockable wheels, and decide whether to rent (short-term) or buy (long-term).
Bringing a loved one home from hospital is a relief, but a normal bed often makes care harder than it needs to be. A hospital bed lets the patient sit up, makes caregiving safer, and helps prevent complications such as pressure sores. Here's how to choose the right one, step by step.
1. Start with the patient's needs
Ask the doctor, nurse or physiotherapist these questions before you choose:
- Can the patient get in and out of bed alone, with help, or not at all?
- Do they need to sit up for breathing, feeding or medicines?
- Will they spend most of the day in bed?
- How long is the bed likely to be needed: weeks, months, or permanently?
- Are there any positions the doctor has asked for, or asked you to avoid?
2. Pick the bed type
| Patient situation | Suitable bed |
|---|---|
| Mobile, mostly needs to sit up comfortably | Fowler & Semi-Fowler Beds (semi-fowler or fowler) |
| In bed most of the day, needs to sit up often | Fowler bed (backrest + knee rest) |
| Bedridden, after major surgery or stroke, or needs frequent turning | ICU Beds: three-function or five-function, ideally electric |

3. Electric or manual?
Electric beds adjust with a hand remote, so the patient can often change position without calling for help, and caregivers don't have to turn cranks. Manual beds use hand cranks; they cost less and work during power cuts. If one family member will be doing most of the caregiving, an electric bed is worth considering. Read the full comparison: Manual vs Electric Hospital Bed (and 3-Function vs 5-Function).
4. Check the room
- Size: fowler beds are about 2050 × 900 mm and ICU beds about 2100 × 1000 mm. Leave space on at least one side, ideally both, for caregivers, a commode or a wheelchair.
- Getting it in: measure doorways, lifts and corridor turns.
- Power: electric beds need a socket close to the bed.
- Placement: keep the bed near a window and a bathroom if possible, and away from heaters.
5. Don't forget the mattress
The mattress matters as much as the bed. Choose a medical mattress that matches the bed (one that bends with the backrest and knee sections) with a waterproof, wipe-clean cover. See the Semi Fowler Mattress, Fowler Mattress and Plain Mattress. For patients at high risk of pressure sores, ask the doctor whether a special pressure-relief mattress is needed.
6. Safety features to insist on
- Side railings that lock up and fold down; collapsible railings make transfers easier.
- Lockable castor wheels, so the bed doesn't move during transfers.
- A sturdy frame with a durable, rust-resistant finish (powder-coated MS or stainless steel).
7. Useful accessories
- An Overbed / Cardiac Tables or Overbed Table ABS Top for meals and reading in bed
- An MS IV Stand With Wheel if drips are needed at home
- A Commode Wheel Chair for safe toileting and moving around the house
- A Plain Bedside Locker to keep medicines and essentials within reach
8. Rent or buy?
Rent if you expect a limited recovery period, for example a few weeks after surgery. Buy if care will continue for many months or permanently, as is common with elderly parents or chronic conditions, because buying usually works out cheaper over time. In Pune you can rent an ICU bed from Solvix Health Care, and all our beds are available to buy with delivery across India.
Frequently asked questions
Which hospital bed is best for an elderly parent at home?
If your parent can move a little and mainly needs to sit up, a fowler bed is usually enough. If they are bedridden or need help to change position, an electric ICU bed makes care much easier and safer for the family.
Do I need a special mattress for a hospital bed?
Yes. Use a medical mattress that fits the bed and bends with its sections, with a waterproof, washable cover. A normal home mattress does not fold properly and is hard to keep clean.
How much space does a hospital bed need?
Fowler beds are about 2050 × 900 mm and ICU beds about 2100 × 1000 mm. Allow extra space on at least one side for caregivers and equipment such as a wheelchair or commode.
Is it better to rent or buy a hospital bed?
Renting is better for short recoveries. Buying is usually better value when the bed will be needed for many months or permanently.
